What does price base amount mean?
The price base amount forms the basis for the calculation of pensions and other social benefits. The extent of the amount is determined by the government for one year at a time and is based on how much prices have risen or fallen. This year the price base amount is SEK 58 800.
No medical examination
The basic idea of members’ children insurance is that everyone who wants to be involved should also be included. Therefore, members’ children insurance is taken out without a health declaration. We have, instead, introduced time and age limits in the event of illness, which are the same for everyone.
This means that the insurance has limited protection in the event of an illness during the first half-year but provides compensation for medical and travel costs, for example. If you have our pregnancy insurance with extended protection, members’ children insurance applies without any time limit in the event of an illness right from the very day you have signed up for it. A prerequisite is, however, that you sign up for members’ children insurance within six months of the child’s birth.

Crisis therapy prevents mental illness
If a child is not doing well, the whole family will be affected. If the child suffers from mental illness after, for example, being subjected to bullying, robbery or the death of a close relative, you can get help. The child is offered the chance to speak with a psychologist or psychotherapist on up to ten occasions. We also provide compensation for travel and interpreters. There is no excess but the costs must be approved by us in advance.
Crisis therapy for close relatives
We also offer crisis therapy to the child’s immediate relatives if the child suffers an injury or illness that we compensate, or if the child dies. The relative is offered a conversation with a psychologist or psychotherapist on up to ten occasions. We also provide compensation for travel and interpreters. There is no excess but the costs must be approved by us in advance.

Important to consider
Onset of an illness before insurance is taken out
The insurance does not apply to an illness or physical faults, nor for the consequences of such conditions, if the symptoms were manifest before the day the insurance is taken out.
A calculation example
Niklas takes out child insurance for his 3-year old daughter Lisa. Prior to Niklas taking out the insurance policy Lisa has been diagnosed as being diabetic. Compensation is not payable from the child insurance since the illness was discovered before the policy was taken out.
Limitations in the event of certain illnesses
If the insurance is taken out after the age of 6 has been reached the insurance does not apply to neuro-psychiatric disorders (such as developmental delay) irrespective of when the symptoms of the illness appeared, nor for the following illnesses if the symptoms became apparent before the insurance had been in force for at least one continuous year.
If the insurance applies to the following illnesses then compensation is payable in the event of medical disability at a maximum of 10 per cent of the sum insured, but compensation is not payable for financial disability, care costs or temporary parents allowances in respect of seriously ill children.
Mental disorders, haemophilia, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, illnesses affecting the central nerve and muscle systems, sensorineural hearing loss, malformation and chromosomal abnormalities and obesity.
General limitations
Certain limitations also exist in the case of gross negligence, for compensation in case of stay abroad, war, nuclear reaction and certain acts of terrorism.
Limitations in the event of an ailment
In order to have the right to compensation in the event of an illness, other than medical expenses, travel expenses and crisis therapy expenses, the illness or symptoms of an illness must have been evident no earlier than when the insurance has been in force for at least six months.
Examples of compensation in the event of an ailment
No compensation: Karin takes out child insurance for Olle. When, after three months, Olle started to wee and drink increasingly often, she became alarmed. Following an examination it transpires that Olle had become diabetic. In this instance the insurance has limited applicability regarding the illness since the insurance had not been in force for at least six months. Compensation is, however, payable for medical and travel expenses above the excess, as well as crisis therapy.
Compensation: Karin takes out child insurance for Olle. After a year it emerges that Olle has become diabetic. A major adjustment awaits the family but, since the qualifying period of six months has passed, compensation can be paid. Olle has illness and accident insurance cover at 25 price base amounts, SEK 1 470 000, and can receive SEK 301 800 in compensation, which you can see in detail below.
Compensation for, and paid-out, amount
- SEK 200 - doctor and travel costs above the excess
- SEK 600 - emergency compensation for hospital overnight stay

- SEK 220 500 permanent reduction in physical ability (medical disability)

Olle’s family can also receive help from the insurance in the form of crisis management.

For the following illnesses or conditions, compensation cannot be provided from financial disability, activity capital, nursing allowance or temporary parental allowance for the care of a seriously ill child. Compensation is paid for medical disability at a maximum of 10 per cent of the sum insured. Other items are compensated according to the terms and conditions.

Frequently asked questions and answers
Here you can read the answers to the most common questions about the insurance.
Doesn’t the municipality or school’s insurance cover everything?
The municipality’s insurance rarely covers illness, which is one of the most common causes of disability. Many accidents also occur during leisure time, when many municipal policies do not apply.
What is so good about child insurance?
A child insurance policy is an important supplement to the protection provided by society and can make a big difference to a family’s finances. It ensures that your child is insured 24/7 for both illness and accidents.
The child insurance provides compensation for, for example, care costs, disability and certain diagnoses and also serves as an important financial support for a child who, in the future, has restricted opportunities for working due to a disability.
As an adult, the child can receive financial help that will make a great difference to their quality of life. A child insurance policy is thus able to help the child both now and in the future. It can also provide the family with financial help if a parent is granted care allowance in order to look after the child.
Does the insurance cover all illnesses?
Yes, but with a restricted scope for certain illnesses and conditions. Examples of such illnesses and conditions include autism, Asperger's syndrome, epilepsy and ADHD. You can read more about it in the insurance terms and conditions under “Restrictions to the insurance policy’s validity”.
There are also rules governing the age at which the insurance is taken out. If the insurance is taken out after the child’s sixth birthday, it does not, for example, apply to developmental delay. Nor does it apply to certain illnesses and conditions which present during the first insurance year.
My son sustained a football injury and had to be operated on. Does the insurance apply?
The insurance covers injuries which arise through accidents and, in our insurance, injuries sustained when engaged in sports are also included. Your son’s compensation is calculated, for example, on the basis of hospital stays, scars and any medical disability.
Talk with the football club as well; they may also have an insurance policy. If it is with a company other than Folksam, we sort out the question of compensation in conjunction with them.
My daughter is 12 years old; can I take out insurance for her?
Yes, you can take out insurance for her until she reaches the age of 18. It then applies up to and including the policy year in which she turns 25.
